Journey Palliative and Hospice is based in Burbank, and serves the surrounding area. As this is a very diverse area, one of our priorities is to ensure that we are providing services that are inclusive for all our patients and their loved ones. Here are some of the ways we do that.
- A multicultural team. The composition of our hospice team is itself multicultural. That means that regardless of the demographics of our patients, there will generally be staff members who directly understand their cultural expectations and needs. We also train our staff as a whole to be aware of how cultural differences can impact care, so that every healthcare worker can provide a compassionate and respectful experience to patients.
- Our team speaks multiple languages. One of the keys to providing respectful services, facilitating communication, and ensuring that the patient’s autonomy is preserved is to be able to have clear, informative conversations. That is only possible if any language barriers can be crossed. Sometimes patients need interpreters. But in many cases, patients in our hospice care do not, because we have a multilingual staff. That means that chances are good that we have someone who will be able to communicate with your loved one directly in their preferred language.
- Support for every belief system. Another way we make our hospice services inclusive is by providing spiritual support for every faith. Our chaplain services are non-denominational, and can be tailored to the needs of each individual patient. Similarly, our counselors, as well as the rest of our staff and volunteers, will always be deeply respectful of each patient’s beliefs. This is embodied both in how our staff members communicate with patients, as well as the steps they take to ensure that the patient’s autonomy is preserved and their agency is respected.
- A commitment to diversity and inclusivity. In our discussion above, we have outlined several of the specific ways in which we take steps to create an environment that celebrates diversity and inclusivity. But our commitment to creating an inclusive setting for hospice patients and staff is also a broader mindset, where the whole is more than the sum of its parts. This philosophy of inclusive care is woven through every aspect of how we do business, from hiring, to training, to management and beyond. We believe this commitment will be clear to patients and their loved ones from the moment they pick up a phone call to schedule a consultation. We strive to make our hospice services as warm and welcoming as possible.
